Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea, May 28-30, 2020
The Korean Society for Feminist Studies in English Literature (KFSEL) presents a conference on “Feminisms Now” to be held from Thursday, May 28, 2020 to Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Yonsei University, Seoul.
We invite scholars, students, and activists to discuss practical and theoretical challenges for feminism today, including, but not limited to, feminism’s relationship to neoliberalism and late capitalism; feminism and labor; ecofeminism; the state of feminism and gender studies within academic discourse and critical theory; and the role of literature and culture in movements such as #MeToo. Keeping in mind the astonishing momentum of the #MeToo movement in South Korea, we’ll also reflect on how feminist movements scale up and down between the local and transnational. How might culturally contingent, specific, personal narratives of sexual violence gain wider traction and concrete executive force? Is international feminist solidarity even possible under current conditions of global inequality?
We welcome papers on the following topics:
social reproduction theory
feminism and anti-capitalism
feminism and neoliberalism
women and labor, housework and care work
sex work and the commercialization of the body
the aftereffects of so-called sexual liberation
feminism and the environment
feminist theory and practice after #MeToo
misogynist discourse, its forms and history
the place of feminist, gender, queer theory in critical theory
literary and filmic representations and/or aestheticizations of sexual violence
race and gender
the possibilities of transnational feminism
contemporary feminist literature and film
Each presentation will be limited to 20 minutes, followed by discussions and Q & A sessions. Graduate students are also welcome to submit proposals and to participate in the conference.
